The white box on top is a lamp for ordinary white-light illumination, not fluorescence. The fluorescence mercury lamp is off the back, hard to see. The black slider off the back right contains filters. The camera is off the side port on the left.

All the wires go off to the various power supplies. We keep them away from the microscope to minimize vibration and electrical noise.
